We are pleased to inform all our partners about the relaunch of the ZimCitizensWatch platform. The platforms’ relaunch on February 9, 2024, marks a significant milestone for us, because of all our platforms it is the one that directly links the actions of a government with the concerns or desires of citizens. As you know our work is centered around the needs, activities and operations of citizens with and alongside their government. No development can truly take place if citizens and governments are not working together.

This platform tracks the activities of the Zimbabwean government from the appointment of the current sitting president on the 4th of September 2023. It is part of a suite of trackers covering Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia. The full suite of trackers is available here on the African Citizens Watch platform.

ZimCitizensWatch was first established in 2018 by SIVIO Institute. At that time, it was created based on the manifesto of the elected government to track the progress of the actions promised in the election manifesto. This was good, but we noticed that inequality is growing in Zimbabwe and although the government seems to be ‘performing well’ on other indicators it was devoid of actions that citizens wanted to see taking place at local authority level or at central government level.

We shifted focus to dwell on the actions citizens want to see, keeping in mind that a democratic government should be working for and on behalf of its citizens. We are now tracking 144 activities based on issues that were raised by citizens as being most important for Zimbabwe’s development and we will continue to track them until the end of Emmerson Mnangagwa’s second term in office in 2028.
