Dr Tendai Murisa (Executive Director of SIVIO Institute)

We have just participated in a webinar hosted by The University of Indiana Lilly School of Philanthropy. Our Executive Director (Tendai Murisa) joined the panel to discuss “Higher Education and Philanthropy in Sub-saharan Africa.” His talk centered around the role of high-net-worth individuals (HNWI) and the impact they have had in promoting education especially higher education for vulnerable youth in Zimbabwe and the region. He made his presentation alongside other panelists including Roberta Bassett of the World Bank who is a Global Leader for Tertiary Education and a senior education consultant; Una Osili who is the Associate Dean for Research and International Programs at University of Indiana Lilly School of Family Philanthropy. She is a professor of Economic and Philanthropic studies. Lastly on the panel was Cyrus Ssebugenyi who is the head of Standards and Qualifications National Council for Higher Education In Uganda.

As part of the discussion the group noted the important role that the operating environment plays influenced by regulations and policies. These polices impact how non-profits and philanthropic organizations operate and limit the extent of the work they can do. This ease of doing philanthropy was one of the main issues discussed in webinar.
